(KSL News) For the first time, students and faculty members at Western Governors University got to meet face to face.

The online school held its summer graduation in Abravanel Hall today.

U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson shared the floor with four new graduating students who overcame trials to accomplish their dreams.

Selected graduates spoke of the obstacles they went through to pursue their career. Inspiring speakers ranged from a graduate fighting spine cancer to a 60-year-old farmer graduating alongside his daughter.

Hundreds of people from all walks of life throughout the country will receive degrees from the Western Governors University (WGU) tomorrow. The nonprofit, online university was created more than 10 years ago. We visited with one of the Utah graduates who earned her degree while overcoming a life-threatening disease.

Kimberly Lillywhite is setting up her first classroom. At long last she is a teacher. She finished her degree online at WGU. "This is a really unique and fun way to get a degree, especially if you're self-motivated. I could do it on the weekends, I could do it at night, I could do it in the middle of the day. WGU is amazing," she said.

Her WGU mentor says the same about her because along with the online papers and tests, Lillywhite had to deal with the sick days that come with chemotherapy. She worked for good grades and fought cancer that had spread to her spine. "I'd seriously be in my pajamas all day, lay in bed, and I would do homework until I felt like I was ready to take a test," Lillywhite said.

Lillywhite says she did not get through this alone. She gives a great deal of credit to her faith, her family and the medical team who became her friends. "Started out really depressed, and I didn't want to get out of bed, and I just thought life was over. I had these really great doctors and nurses down at the U who would call me every day and tell me something funny. They were awesome," she said.

She put college aside to raise four children, then they helped her through the bad days to get her homework done. Now, Lillywhite says, "[I'm] doing really good. Our family's been blessed. I feel like maybe this is a new chapter for us."

Her lifelong dream of being a teacher is about to come true. "I love kids and wanted to give back. And so I am. I feel like I'm in a fairytale land most of the time, 'cause I can't believe this is really my room. This is Mrs. Lillywhite's room. I'm really excited," she said.

On August 25th, she will welcome 28 sixth graders with a big smile, a new degree and all the preparation and enthusiasm she can muster.

Lillywhite will be one of the speakers at tomorrow's graduation at Abravanel Hall. Degrees will be awarded to 642 graduates from 48 states. Representative Jim Matheson will deliver the commencement speech.

SALT LAKE CITY -- College students from around the country received their degrees in Utah Saturday.

The Western Governors University awarded 891 bachelors and masters degrees at Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City.

WGU students earn their degrees entirely online, but close to 130 graduates participated in the university's 17th commencement ceremony.

"Western Governors had everything I needed to be flexible with my son, work full time and get an education at the same time. It just fit me perfectly," said graduate Ravonda Hardy.

Dr. Samuel H. Smith, president emeritus of Washington State University, delivered the commencement address.

WGU was founded in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors. Saturday's graduating class was the largest to date.

Teaching Scholarships And Grants For Students

The teaching profession has experienced some temporary setbacks recently due to the economy, but as federal funding increases and the number of positions grows, the profession could very well experience one of the most remarkable rebounds within the next few years. That bodes well with high school students who are considering teaching on most any level, especially at public schools who are the recipient of special funding.

To encourage students to pursue degrees in womanElementary Education, Special Education, Math, Science and other specialties, a number of scholarships have been created to help students achieve their goals. SayCampusLife.com has identified some of them here and is offering that information for your review:

American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) – A variety of college scholarships offered in a number of different disciplines is open to legally blind students via the AFB annually. Residency restrictions may apply and some scholarships are one-time offerings while others are offered each academic year.

American Montessori Society (AMS) – To encourage students to pursue teaching careers utilizing the Montessori teaching method, the AMS aspiring Montessori teacher who has been accepted or is in the process of acceptance by an affiliated AMS teacher education program is eligible to apply for a scholarship. Upwards of 20 awards are given for any academic year.

Journalism Education Assocation (JEA) – The JEA sponsors up to three $1,000 scholarships for education majors who intend to teach scholastic journalism. Each recipient must be an upper-division or master’s degree student in a college program designed to prepare him/her for teaching at the secondary-school level.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund – State Farm Companies Foundation has assisted Hispanic college students through its relationship with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund since 1990. Each year, the insurance giant provides $2,500 scholarships to 25 Hispanic college students who are pursuing a teaching career.

Microsoft College Scholarships – Microsoft Corporation (MSN) is a supporter of those students who are pursuing a career in Computer Science. In its most recent award period, MSN offered scholarships in four areas – General Scholarships, Women’s Scholarships, Underrepresented Minority Scholarships, and Scholarships for Students with Disabilities.

National Federation of the Blind Scholarship Program (NFB) – Students who are legally blind in both eyes can apply for a college scholarship from the NFB. In 2009, the NFB awarded scholarships ranging from $3-12,000 which were awarded to students pursuing degrees in a number of fields, not just teaching.

Siemens Teacher Scholarships – In partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, the Siemens Foundation provides one million dollars in scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in education, and enrolled at the historically black colleges and universities that are members of the organization.

WGU Scholarships for Rural Mathematics and Science Educators – Western Governors University (WGU), an online university founded by the governors of 19 western states and territories, offers scholarships, each valued up to $7,500, which are designed to help working adults attend college online to become highly-qualified mathematics and science teachers in America’s rural schools. They are made available through a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

When applying for any college scholarship, please follow instructions precisely and make note of application deadlines. Most scholarships have been awarded for the 20009-2010 academic year with 2010-2011 applications being accepted between this fall and next spring.

Online Education: Western Governors University

Western Governors University

The following is one in an ongoing series of articles exploring the various online educational opportunities available for today’s college students.

Unlike many of the larger online for-profit universities, Western Governors University (WGU) operates as a nonprofit entity, tasked with educating students in a variety of fields. Founded in 1997 thanks to the collective efforts of nineteen western US governors, WGU was designed to fill the need for additional educational opportunities for the rapidly growing west. The governors realized that distant learning could reach many more students while serving to help their states offer higher education without allocating scarce public funds to expand or create new universities.

WGU has a physical presence in Salt Lake City, UT, but teaches most of its classes online. One exception will be its newly approved nursing program which will operate online but also work in conjunction with three Southern California hospitals for onsite instruction. SayCampusLife.com mentioned this program previously in, “Online University Pledges To Help Ease Nursing Shortage,” noting that the program will begin this month.
Mentoring Is The WGU Way

Because of its tie to the governors of nineteen states and the territory of Guam, WGU has taken an extra step to ensure that its students are receiving the education that they need to succeed. That step involves assigning a working mentor to each student who advises and assists them from the time when they initially enroll in WGU through class completion. An Academic Action Plan (AAP) is developed to help guide students, which operates as a blueprint and schedule to help them complete their degrees.

WGU students can work at their own pace, even accelerating their studies if their schedule permits. Working with their mentor students complete assessments (which serve as learning benchmarks) to help them reach their educational goals. Essays, term papers and online tests are all part of the WGU learning experience, traditional learning styles that effectively blend with technological enhancements.
Courses of Study

Nationally and regionally accredited coursework leading to Bachelors and Masters degrees are offered through WGU. WGU operates colleges centered on teaching, business, information technology and the health professions. Currently, more than 11,000 students from all fifty states are enrolled in WGU as the school is open to students beyond the sponsoring states.

Tuition for all students, no matter where they are domiciled is the same, with students paying a fixed rate for each six month period that they are enrolled. As of this writing, the basic tuition for each six month period (which equals a semester) is just $2890, less than half the amount charged by many of WGU’s for-profit online competitors. College scholarships are available through the university and the school accepts third-party scholarships, corporate reimbursement, GI bill and VA benefits and other forms of financial aid.

Although fairly new, WGU has gained a good reputation from a number of sources who recognize that the university offers a distant learning opportunity that most students can afford. With online learning growing sharply, WGU appears to offer the best bang for the buck along with the recognition and state support that some students will find to be important to them.

Adv. — Online learning opens a world of educational opportunities for students. Western Governors University to Study How Online Programs Can Boost College Completion Rates for Low-Income Students

Research to focus on critical needs of underserved students: flexible schedules, personalized mentoring, accelerated learning options

Western Governors University to Study How Online Programs Can Boost College Completion Rates for Low-Income Students

SALT LAKE CITY, July 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Western Governors University (WGU) www.wgu.edu, one of the nation's leading online colleges, announced a $1.2 million investment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to examine how its flexible, competency-based degree programs can help improve the nation's low graduation rates among low-income and minority students ages 18-26.

In today's economy, a college degree is a prerequisite for economic success. Yet where the United States was once first in the world in postsecondary completion rates, it now ranks tenth. Until recently, reform efforts and national policies have focused on increasing access to college and certification. But those efforts have done little to actually help students earn the credentials they need to obtain well-paying jobs and a better life.

A recent Gates Foundation-commissioned study conducted by Leo Burnett determined the challenge of juggling work and class schedules to be one of the largest hurdles facing young people as they try to earn a degree. While these students, who are disproportionately from low-income families, believe a stable work schedule would help them complete a postsecondary program, they also believe that access to affordable, high-quality online degree programs could greatly alleviate the problem. Many of these students also cite their preference for an accelerated program that will help them gain critical skills and join the workforce quickly, so they can support themselves and their families.

Nationwide, the number of people taking classes online continues to grow, and 20 percent of higher education students now take at least one online course. Newly released Department of Education research revealed that students who took all or part of their instruction online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through face to face instruction.

"WGU is committed to developing education models that work for American college students who can't attend a traditional college or have to work," said WGU President Robert Mendenhall. "This grant will help us identify and implement the factors that will help these students successfully complete their education."

For more than a decade, Western Governors University has offered students programs that address their needs: flexible online courses of study, with personalized attention by a faculty mentor, and a program that enables students to advance based on what they know, not how much time they've spent in a classroom. The foundation's grant will help WGU research the effectiveness of its programs for low-income young adults with the goal of clarifying what role a competency-based online university can play in boosting completion rates for these students.

The study will extend through September of 2010, and will focus on:

* The effectiveness of the WGU academic model for low-income students ages 18-26;
* Interventions that improve the success and graduation rates for these students; and
* Federal and state advocacy efforts that address issues surrounding technology-delivered, competency-based education.

The results of this research will immediately drive instructional intervention strategies at WGU.

The WGU study will also track students into the workplace after they complete their degrees to determine how effective their education was in helping them obtain and hold a job.

With the goal of getting more young people to and through college, the Gates Foundation's Postsecondary Success initiative aims to double the number of low-income students who earn a postsecondary degree or credential with genuine value in the workplace by age 26. Since 2000, the foundation has invested nearly $4 billion in grants in scholarships to improve opportunity in the United States by improving schools, raising college-ready graduation rates, and increasing college completion rates.

"In the United States today, there are millions of young adults who have the ability and desire to continue their education past high school. However, they are stalled by limited access to affordable, quality options and competing demands for their time and energy," said Hilary Pennington, the director of Special Initiatives for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "WGU's programs, which allow students to work full-time while they earn their degrees, offer a practical way to complete a quality college education. We look forward to working with the university to find ways to dramatically improve college completion rates for young, low-income students."

WGU was created by 19 U.S. governors to establish a competency-based learning model, share distance-learning resources, improve the quality of higher education, and expand access to underserved populations. Today it serves more than 14,000 students in all 50 states.

WGU degree programs are delivered using technology--individualized and self-paced with the one-on-one guidance and support of a faculty mentor. Undergraduate tuition is approximately $6,000 per year, roughly the same as a state college or university, and considerably less than other online universities.

Western Governors University

WGU is the only accredited online university in the U.S. offering competency-based degree programs. Now serving more than 14,000 students, the private, non-profit university has been a leader in online education for more than 10 years. WGU is the recipient of the USDLA 21st Century Award for Best Practices in Distance Learning for 2008, awarded in recognition of WGU's success in expanding access to higher education. WGU has been honored as one of the 2008 Top 20 Military Friendly Colleges and Universities by Military Advanced Education magazine. WGU sponsors the Online Student Survival Guide, a blog that addresses many of the questions and daily concerns students attending any online college or university face. More information is available at www.wgu.edu/onlinesuccess.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people's health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people--especially those with the fewest resources--have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by CEO Jeff Raikes and Co-chair William H. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett. VA colleges! with this grade?
I am majorly depressed..My career choices have been bad, I am 32 years-old....right now I am living overseas, I teach at a University in South Amerca and bcs. I didnt want to waste anymore time, I started a Masters Degree in School Counseling ONLINE last year, I have already put one year into this program, invested a lot of money.

Well, I just came back to the U.S., and I have realized that I do not like ONLINE study, it is not for me....However, I have 1 year left of classwork, then 1/2 year internship. I have thought about just quitting this program and goign to the local Universit to do the same program. AT this point it would cost the SAME, as online costs more (and the local university would be less...), and i would finish at the same point. I just dont know if it is worth the effort, I am upset with myself, doing this online was a mistake, but as I have spent so much moeny already and one year, dont know if I should just finish it. What do you think?

Should I continue this online program?
I am currently getting into my junior year of college majoring in Neuroscience and I began realizing that if I don't get into a medical school, I have no clue what I would do! I love neuroscience, read research papers for fun, want to be a neurosurgeon, but despite my extracurriculars and internships my GPA is not very good and that could well be my ticket to the curb. My university only offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in neuroscience and that scares me as well.

Is it hard to get into a graduate school to pursue a masters or PhD in neuroscience? I also have a lot of student loans (80k right now), would any program pay for graduate school? ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

What can I do with a B.A. Neuroscience degree?
i have two options so i was wondering if yall could help me. i am going to school to get my bachelors in early childhood education.

1) get my aa degree at a community college and then transfer to a university to receive my bachelors in early childhood education.

2) get an as degree in childhood management at a community college and stay there to receive my bachelors in childhood education. (the community college i am attending offers this bachelors program)

tuition is not an issue, i have a tuition waiver for 4 years of school for free plus they pay for all my books. so if cost is not an option which would be better? option 1 or 2, and please explain! thank you!!!

which option is better for college?
I'm currently in my second term of college. I started out with environmental technician program out of uncertainty, but I'm still feeling a pull toward health care. However, the area I live in has the dreaded 4 year long waiting list for nursing school.

I would like stay in school as I'm wait listed for nursing school(s), so I was wondering which of these two year programs would compliment a RN education and why. I'm assuming physical therapist assistant is the better one, but I may be wrong.

http://www.zanestate.edu/curriculum/PTA.pdf

http://www.zanestate.edu/curriculum/OTA.pdf

I'm also going to look into getting a CNA license, but deciding on one of these two program my focus right now.

Thanks. :)

Preparation for (associate) nursing degree?
I have been getting ph calls from them (seems like they're soliciting). I have my bachelor's in Communications and plan to work toward my Master's degree in Elementary Ed. They apparently have an online program and said that if I take 2 classes every 8 wks, I can finish in a year to a year and a half.

But my question is, is this an accredited, credible, respected "university"? Apparently they have a campus and all that. Not that having a campus makes it legit...

Does anybody have any knowledge of this school, or any tips/ advice on how to find out if they're legit? Thank you!!! :)

Grand Canyon University... a "real" college?
I would like to work researching, developing and implementing programs to help children and families in third world countries and I'm not sure which degree would best prepare me for such a job and get me in the door for places like the Gates Foundation?

Is a masters in public health or public policy better to prepare me for working at a foundation?
I'm going to graduate with a bachelor's degree in health care admin./business in a year, but I will most likely be drafted to play professional baseball (low A in virginia) following graduation. I realize that pro baseball careers are usually very short-lived so I was considering air traffic control. Will my chances of getting a job be slim since I didn't attend a CTI program? How is the overall job outlook for the next 10 years?

Job outlook for Air Traffic Controllers?
The AA [Affirmative action program] was originally created to off-set an incredibly jaded social system that knowingly marginalized specific demographics.

Now, that system hasn't been completelely over-hauled, there are still disparities that exist in modern socieity with the U.S.--BUT, there are avenues for advancement --far more than existed when the program was first created

Seeing as how AA doesn't even benefit the group that pioneered it's development--Blacks, atleast not to the degree it benefits white women, it only stands to reasont that Blacks stand nothing to lose if it is revoked. So that when a Black does get a degree from Harvard, people can;t say, "You only got in because of AA"

Hi I have a telephone interview next week and they said they will ask me competency based questions on:

developing relationships

motivation.

But I want to know how will they ask me these questions? Will they say something like, tell me about a time when you have been motivated to do something? Thanks alot

Can you help me on these competency based questions?
I am planning on going to cosmetology school in the fall for esthetics, and maybe hair as well (just to have a little more rounded set of skills). I am looking for schools and am trying to figure out the pro's and con's between clock-hour schools and competency based schools. The schools that offer competency based programs rave about it, yet I hear different sides of the story from different people. What's your opinion?

Also, I'm on a tight budget and not willing to take out a loan for school (I have too much debt as it is- and who needs more in this economy?). I hear from most people to go to the cheapest school (of course given that it's reputable) because you'll gain most of your experience out of school anyway. Thoughts?

Thank you!!

HELP -- Competency Based Interviews?
Hi there, I have a second interview for my dream graduate job tomorrow. I am going to get a range of competency-based questions. As it is a graduate position, I have no direct experience in the industry. Please help me with some great answers to competency-based questions such as:
1) Give me an example when you have worked well as part of a team.

I appreciate that answers need to be personal, and relate to my experiences, but I am struggling a little. Please help!

Please help me with answers to Competency-Based Questions?
I am about to graduate from an online university - Western Governor University (WGU). WGU is a Regionally Accredited University (Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities). Can I get an admission in regular traditional Law School?

WGU is design with competency-based exams. Upon the graduation, you don’t get any kind of GPA, all it says B and higher. But to get into Law School… they look at your GPA. I am not sure how this is going to work? Any advice?

University of Massachusetts Lowell or Southern New Hampshire University?
So heres the situation, I did alright my Freshmen year in HS getting all As and Bs EXCEPT for getting one D in Japanese; I believe my GPA for that year was 3.2.

My Sophomore year was a totally different story; I went through serious depression/insomnia and stopped going to classes entirely; pretty much failing all of them. Since at the time I didn't care about school or even living in general and I also went as far as to attempting suicide. Now after getting the help I needed I'm feeling absolutely better and I've been transferred into an accredited online school which works with my sleeping issues. All I want now is to graduate and go to a good college in California (a CSU preferably)

I'll be working part time throughout my Junior year and I'll be doing TONS of community service (at nursing homes and hospitals) since I'll be doing school online; there aren't many clubs that I could join.

So I was wondering if I did very well my Junior/Senior year, like getting 4.0s and doing excellent on my SATs. Will the University look past what happened my Sophomore year?

Also what Colleges do you think would accept me: I'm looking to major in biology/biochemistry. And what SAT score should I aim for?

My first choice of a college is CSU-Fullerton, do I have a chance of being accepted there?

I did very bad my Sophomore year will that hurt my chances of getting into College?
what? are you high? stupid fu(k

Can anyone recommend an online accredited University that offers flexibility and transferable credits?
I've been looking into getting my masters in psychology online. I've whenever I search Yahoo Capella University seems to come up in every result but I've heard quite a few negatives so I'm a bit apprehensive. I want to go some where accredited that will be recognized by an employer once I graduate.

Can anyone that has attended or is attending college online tell me what is the best choice? What are the pros and cons and did you land a good job after graduation?

Thanks for any advice you can give, it's greatly appreciated!

What's the best online college to attend?
hire a paralegal or legal assistant that received their degree from the online division of a college or university?
I'm in school working on getting my Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies, and have no option but to go online. I really feel like I'm learning a lot, but don't want to waste my time and money if no one is going to hire me when I'm finished.
The University I'm attending is regionally accredited, and has a traditional university as well as an online university. The classes are challenging (most are anyway) and fast paced. I love what I'm doing, but if it's not going to matter in the end, I don't see the point in wasting my time.
Thanks!

if you were/are an attorney, would you?
i really would like to know this information. my friend is considering going there but ive got mixed feelings about that school.

Does Kaplan University have an accredited business program or is it an online scam?
Please help me anybody I need an accredited online university that's not too expensive or really expensive at all I'm interested in going to an university online cos I'm planning on getting me a full time job somewhere

What is a good accredited online university?
I have earned about 40 hours towards a Master's Degree at a local university and was never able to finish. Is there any colleges online that will allow me to transfer more than 6-9 hours toward a degree? I am looking for a degree in Health-care Administration. I need for the college to be accredited.

Can someone help me with online colleges?
I did a BA in Economics.

I got a job as a 'junior project manager' (project office/admin in reality).

I started studying Java and databases online by taking online courses through an accredited university.

I just don't have the time to study and I think I might fail.

I started learning C++ I found it fine to do basic things.

Now doing Java ... omg... Java is so bad.

Anyway... am I a fool for trying to learn IT so I can advance in my job.. I feel like such an idiot if I have to drop out and fail.

Am I a fool for trying to get more education ?
There are a lot online, and they all say they are accredited. Ive been looking into the Allied Health Institute, Keiser University Online, Kaplan (out of my price range though), and glanced at Herzing. I just am not sure... Plus, should I go for an AAS, a Certificate in Medical assisting, or a diploma in Medical Assisting? Can someone help, please? There is a Medical Assisting diploma program at the community college here in town. But they require a lot of in school classes, and that's just not an option for me...it's going to be tight getting clinicals in, and that's at the very end, in a year from now, not the whole time. Please, help!

Whats a good online school for a Medical Assistant program?
Okay i know its a lame excuse but i dont have time to go to college at an actual school. I have looked into penn foster and university of phoenix but am not sure whether there legit. Does anyone know any good accredited colleges online or done classes on either of those and actually got a job afterwards. Do employers take it seriously or just kina blow it off as nothing?

I have bachelors from an Online School (Regionally Accredited). Can I get an admission in regular Law Schol?
I am considering changing careers, and might pursue a license to teach grades 5-12 science. I'd love some advice.

I'm an insurance agent, and attending college - online (Information tech major now) but I really love science. I didn't believe there would be any practical opportunities if I majored in geology or astronomy, etc. (I have children) but I am considering changing majors to prepare for teaching science (specifically grades 5-12).

I would change schools to attend this school:
https://www.wgu.edu/ if I decide to make this change. This program:
https://www.wgu.edu/wgu/program_info.asp?progID=444

Are middle/high school science teachers even needed? I thought this might be a good place to begin in the science field since I can go on to a graduate degree and possibly move up to college level teaching.

Any advise or comments are welcome. Thanks.

career change to teaching?
I'm going to a community college and will graduate with my associates after the fall 09. I want to transfer to an online college if possible and I'm looking at Western Governors University(wgu.edu). I was wondering if anyone has gotten a degree in accounting (or other business area) online and how their employers looked apon the degree. Was there any trouble getting a job with the degree? Or trasfering to another college for a masters (online or traditional)? I just want to find out if there is any added trouble with getting a job and pursuing a higher education from having gotten a degree from an online degree. I would be especially interested in anyone's experience who has received a degree from WGU.

But while i'm going to NCC can i take online courses? -I want to take an online course through WGU... WGU is an online accredited school with a BA in teaching program.

Can I attend a Community College and take online classes?
I am a military spouse and stationed overseas. I am here for 18 more months and would like to go to my next base already certified. I am at a remote assignment so I don't have much of a choice, and they do cut the tuition rate substantially for overseas military but I don't want to waste my time if I can not get hired to teach. I don't want to struggle to find a job because of my degree. Any suggestions?
Also, I am not too keen on WGU's 6 month payment block and competency based program.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated!

Western Governor's University (WGU)? ?
I am attending WGU, an online university, and my term started August 1. I have not received my pell grant, and financial aid office which was previously estimating disbursement of pell grant funds at 4-6 weeks after the first day of the term is now saying they have no defined disbursement date, as a change in computer software has caused system problems regarding pell grant disbursement. I would like to be able to purchase textbooks, plan for being able to pay my bills, etc. I am now wondering when and if I will receive my pell. Are there legal requirements for universities regarding disbursement of pell grant funds? What can I do and where can I find more information?

Western Governors University (WGU) is a private, non-profit, online university that was created by 19 western states' governors and incorporated in 1997. It is supported by more than 20 large corporations and foundations, including AT&T, Dell, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Sun Microsystems, HCA, HP, Microsoft, Qwest, Simmons Media Group and Zions Bank . The first students enrolled in 1999. WGU, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, is the only accredited online university in the U.S. offering competency-based degree programs . WGU offers bachelor's and master's degrees in information technology, business, teacher education and health professions. All courses are completed on-line; there is no campus.
1
WGU is the only university to be accredited by four regional accrediting organizations (February 2003); WGU is now accredited under the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It is also nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council; and received National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education NCATE accreditation for 5 years in October 2006. In June 2008, WGU surpassed 10,000 enrolled students.
3
The university was founded in 1997 by 19 governors, led by Roy Romer when he was governor of Colorado, Michael O. Leavitt when he was governor of Utah, and Jim Geringer when he was governor of Wyoming. As of 2008 Geringer remains directly involved with WGU as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
7
The ongoing bipartisan support from governors received by WGU is attested to by the those recently active on the board. Janet Napolitano, Democratic governor of Arizona, and Jon Huntsman, Jr., Republican governor of Utah served jointly until 2008 when Bill Ritter, Jr., the Democratic governor of Colorado was seated on the board—replacing Napolitano.
9
Western Governors University offers online bachelor’s degrees in the following majors: Information Technology, Health Informatics, Nursing, Business, Business Management, Finance, Accounting, and Marketing Management. Information Technology students receive 8-9 nationally recognized IT certifications as a part of their program. There are also several bachelor degree options for prospective teachers. Online masters programs include: Business, Nursing, Education, Health Education, Special Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, and English Language Learning. MBA graduates receive the Certified MBA (CMBA) designation.
11
All aspects are completed entirely online with no scheduled class times. Exams are taken at proctored exam sites, such as participating local colleges and universities. Exams are not "open book."
12
Unlike other online schools, students have a working mentor who advises and assists from enrollment through class completion. Each mentor/student team creates a personal academic action plan (AAP) that is required to complete courses in a timely manner. According to the current job description posted on the WGU Careers site, a mentor must possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree, while a master's or doctoral degree and relevant industry (clinical) experience are preferred (exceptional academic and either industry or clinical experience may substitute for a terminal degree where appropriate).
13
In an Educational Pathways article, Dan Eastmond, director of learning resources at WGU reported that some of WGU partners include Chadron State College, Rio Salado College, Utah State University, California State University, and Northern Arizona University for instructor-led online learning courses. He explained that some of these online-learning-provider partnerships leave open slots for WGU students in their traditional online courses that are offered on a full-semester basis. Other arrangements have open enrollments in 8- to 12-week online courses that are offered on a consistently revolving basis throughout the year.
14
Eastman reported that WGU also works with educational enterprises that offer online courses on a monthly or twice-monthly basis. Information-technology or business-oriented, independent-study e-learning modules that can take anywhere from four to eight hours to complete are provided by such companies as NetG and SkillSoft. The article also mentioned that MyLabSchool, which has a collection of online tools designed to help students transition to teachers, and TeachScape, a technology-enabled professional development services company for educators, are utilized in the Teachers College.
17
Colleges and universities traditionally award credit for classroom hours attended, conferring degrees based on students’ completion of a certain set of courses for a given number of credit hours. As an online institution that provides its students the convenience of studying and completing coursework outside the classroom, however, WGU offers a competency-based program for completing its degree and certificate requirements. Competency-based programs allow students to demonstrate through assessments that they have acquired the set of competencies (levels of knowledge, skill, or ability) required for a particular degree or certificate. Adult students have often acquired many of the skills necessary for a degree through their life or previous work experience. WGU’s competency-based system is designed to enable students to employ such previously learned skills in proving their competency.
19
Students have some control over how many courses they complete per semester. However, it should be noted, particularly for prospective students, that "complete your degree at your own pace" has some limitations and can be quite rigorous.
20
There are no written limitations regarding course loads, but students must have the approval of their mentor to add courses during a semester. In addition, courses can only be added one at a time during the semester, and only after the student's current courses have been completed successfully. When considering adding additional courses, students should keep in mind that processing recent test results, getting a new course added through a mentor, and requesting and being approved for an exam all slow the process down somewhat, reducing the total available time to devote to any new class. Students may take exams without study for some courses if they show competency via pre-assessments. Other courses require weeks-long participation in online courses and written graded submissions.
22
In 2008 WGU won a 21st Century Award for Best Practices in Distance Learning from the U.S. Distance Learning Association (USDLA).
23
WGU is listed in the U.S. News & World Report 2009 Edition of America's Best Colleges as one of the Best Baccalaureate Colleges (Western Region).
24

WGU has the distinction of being the only university to receive regional accreditation from four regional accrediting commissions.(a) the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, (b) the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, (c) the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and (d) the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
35

In May 2009, Western Governors University's Nursing Education Programs have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). 39
In a statement delivered in 2006, WGU's President Robert Mendenhall commented on the school's affordability: "In an era of rapidly rising tuition costs, WGU as private non-profit university has tuition for a 12 month year of just under $5600. This is comparable to tuition for three semesters at many state-subsidized universities where tuition covers less than half the true cost of education. WGU tuition covers the entire cost of the WGU education. Perhaps more importantly from a student perspective, WGU’s competency-based degrees allow well qualified students to complete their education and graduate more quickly, and therefore less expensively, than traditional systems that insist on prerequisites and a certain number of credit hours regardless of the student’s background."

Kaplan Vs Keiser who is better?
Sure, we're not all Anti-Semitic, Christian fundie, Anti-Muslim racists; but a lot of us are, and "Borat" showed us that. Almost all the scenes in "Borat" were shot in real time, and i have to give credit to Cohen for his boldness. If this was a movie depicting Iranians for example, Americans would be the first to love it; and give it all sorts of awards, with all sorts of accreditations.

We have to admit that our Bible belt in the south is extreme. We have to admit that we were/are ignorant fools who annihilated a whole country even though they had nothing to do with 9/11. We have to admit there is still extreme racism here, even though its not necessarily whites targeting blacks etc.

Do a lot of Americans think the movie "Borat" was a waste of time cuz it depicts them in their true colors?
I still have a bunch of GI Bill tuition assistance laying around and am looking to finish my bachelors degree. I came across an online school checked accreditation, read a lot of reviews, and it checks out.

The school offers three concentrations for their Bachelor of Science: Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Studies, Management of Personal Protection, and Intelligence Management.

The job i would like to do is dealing with personal security details, but in the long run what do you think would be the best concentration for a job with the CIA.

What is the best degree concentration for a federal government job?

hey guys, i've sent over a dozen resumes and haven't gotten 1 positive response. What is Wrong with my resume?
the system would proper records need to be kept ?

Ryle pointed out in 1932 that "some quite ordinary forms of expression are 'improper' to the states of affairs they record, invite thereby misassimilation to other forms of expression, and so tend to generate perplexity, even flat nonsense".

Unless fine details are kept, of how the software is accredited, won't it be likely that after the system is accepted by the purchaser, later upgrades will occur and the system won't be properly re-accredited and it will be unsafe to use ?

So the supplier and purchaser need to keep proper records of how they integrated the algorithms into the system.

Otherwise the system won't be maintainable.

Perhaps a year or so later someone will likely "upgrade" the system and leave out much of the necessary re-accreditation.

It must have already happened in actual projects that software is accredited, and the software is later re-used, and insufficient "re-accreditation" occurs, resulting in potential or real mishaps ?

If a supplier and purchaser integrate algorithms into a system and an accreditation organization "accredits"?

About 1 Yr Full Time MBA awarded by London at College of Technology London, degree awarded by University?
I am planning to pursue a career in management. I currently am deciding between MIT's business program (Sloan School of Management) and Harvard. Which one carries more clout in the business realm? I, of course, realize that MIT is amazing in engineering, but here I am referring specifically to management.

I have been trying to compare business schools for some time, but it is hard to get a definitive answer on such a subjective question. So, I bring my question here for an answer. Which is better for business, Harvard or MIT (Sloan School)...or something else (please name).

Please note, if you are going to name another, I am /not/ looking for 'cheap' schools, 'online' schools, etc. I want accreditation and rigorous programs, not party schools, fraternities, or anything of that sort.

Thanks in advance!Difficulty of admission is not my concern. Assume I can get in. Also, I already know /about/ the schools, I'm merely asking which one is /the/ best. The rankings always say 'one of the best.'

Best university for business management in U.S.?
Name the 3 outcomes that run across the 4 standards of accreditation and explain what the term means? I know what the 4 standards are I think the 3 outcomes are A statement of principles, A series of Matter Indicators and An expected outcome for each Matter Indicator but what does each term mean? If you could help I would appreciate it :)

Accreditation is a process in which certification of competency, authority, or credibility is presented.

Organizations that issue credentials or certify third parties against official standards are themselves formally accredited by accreditation bodies (such as UKAS); hence they are sometimes known as "accredited certification bodies". The accreditation process ensures that their certification practices are acceptable, typically meaning that they are competent to test and certify third parties, behave ethically, and employ suitable quality assurance.

One example of accreditation is the accreditation of testing laboratories and certification specialists that are permitted to issue official certificates of compliance with established standards, such as physical, chemical, forensic, quality, and security standards.
